Want to look younger? Do these five things!
Aging is inevitable, right? Yes, but there are ways to slow down the process in many areas. One is our skin. I have written about the effect of muscle loss on our bodies already; knowing that maintaining muscle mass is a must in terms of staying strong, keeping a higher metabolism, and looking years younger. Now it’s time to talk about some simple things one can do to appear younger on the face and neck. Because, hey…there’s nothing wrong with a little healthy dose of vanity now and again. Here are my top, self proven methods to recapturing that youthful glow!
1. Exercise – I know, I’ve already gone there, but this time I am referring to the effect of the increased blood flow to the face during exercise. Studies have shown that the increased blood flow promotes collagen production (structures in our skin that keep it firm).
2. Drink more water- Staying hydrated keeps the skin hydrated and supple. Aim for at least 8 glasses a day. Buy a reusable, eco friendly bottle and fill it up a few times day.
3. Use Retinoids at night – I started using Retin- A after a visit to my dermatologist. I was concerned with past sun damage, fine lines, a dull appearance. My doctor recommended Retin-A because it increases collagen production, fights wrinkles, and even promotes new formation of blood vessels. It can be pricy…look to spend ~$100. But the small container lasts a very long time. If you think about all the money you chunk at over the counter products time after time that don’t really work, you’re probably spending more than $100 in a few months time. Use Retin-A at night before going to bed, and be sure and wear sunscreen on your face during the day. Retin-A increases your skin’s sensitivity to the sun.
4. Exfoliate- If you use retin-A, be careful with this one. Try a mild scrub twice a week to promote new cell turnover. Follow with a moisturizer. Just using a facial scrub sponge with a little baking soda and water will do the trick! The cost? About $1!
5. Moisturize – I know I’ve mentioned wearing sunscreen and moisturizing after exfoliation, but keeping a good moisturizer on at all times is a must. If you have oily skin, there are options for you, just as there are for those with dry skin. I use DeVita Solar Protective moisturizer spf 30 because it is mineral based. Mineral based sunscreens are chemical free, and are excellent at blocking UVB rays (the rays that penetrate deep and cause the breakdown of collagen). Don’t forget to treat your neck the same as your face. The neck and chest regions need all the above steps, and don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your neck and chest area as well. Those areas can really show age (sun spots, wrinkles), so be diligent.
