Review of Ecos Liquid Laundry Detergent

Laundry is a neverending, daunting task that has literally taken over my very existence ever since my precious, yet messy boys have entered my life.  My laundry room is a war zone with ketchup stained t-shirts, poop filled onsies, and of course it wouldn’t be complete without mine and my husband’s clothes honoring the days events with remnants of spit up here, yogurt hand prints there.   Not a day goes by that the laundry monster doesn’t savagely wreak havoc in my house.

Being the oh- so eco conscious person I aspire to be, I set out to try a few ”green” washing detergents.   When doing my research, I made sure to arm myself with knowledge in reference to the big “no no’s” when it came to ingredients to stay away from:

  • nonylphenol ethoxylate or NPE - A surfactant that mimics estrogen, and is an endocrine disruptor
  • phosphates (derivative of phosphorus)-  They essentially soften the effects of “hard” water, combining with the minerals in it, mostly calcium and magnesium, to make the detergent more effective. However, they can cause massive algal blooms in waterways by robbing the water and aquatic life of all-important oxygen.
  • chlorine bleach - eye, skin, lung irritant.

In a nutshell, stay away from non-renewable petroleum-based ingredients. and heavy perfumes, dyes, or artificial brighteners. Look for plant-based ingredients like coconut, soy or palm oil-based surfactants.

I tried many, if not most of the leading organic detergents on the market, and became dismayed by the expensive price tag.  My search ended when I was at Sam’s Club one day, and saw an endcap filled with Ecos Liquid Laundry Detergent with Soy based fabric softener. The fragrance – Organic Lavender.  I was a little worried about the Lavender smell being overpowering. However, after reviewing the ingredient list, I (ugh) heaved it into the cart.

Here’s the overview of the claims:

Ecos Liquid Laundry Detergent is made with all natural ingredients. No petro-derived ingredients are used. All plant-based, non-polluting ingredients, and a great Lavender scent! Contains a natural soy-based fabric softener. Neutral pH.

Specifications:

  • 105 loads
  • Up to 210 loads in HE machines
  • Phosphate free
  • Formaldehyde free
  • Petrochemical free
  • Plant-based, non-polluting ingredients only
  • Safe in all temperatures
  • Kind to sensitive skin
  • Organic Lavender scent
  • Septic safe-
  • The results of this detergent were amazing. Not only was the lavender smell not overpowering, it was just right in my opinion; just enough to give the clothes a fresh smell.  The clothes got clean, and since everyone in my house suffers from sensitive skin, it’s really proven to be gentle and kind to us.  I started using Ecos soon after my second son was born, so it passed the newborn skin test as well!  I was so relieved to not have to buy a separate detergent for my children.

As far as stain removal, I’m telling the truth when I say I’ve thrown some pretty soiled baby clothes in the wash, and they have always came out practically stain free.  I don’t know if this is on account of my using chlorine-free bleach in with all of my laundry loads, or the sole cleaning power of this detergent.

The cost was surprisingly low – $12.99 for 210 oz.  If you have a HE washer, you would use 1 oz per load. That’s 6 cents per load!  I don’t have a HE washer, but this detergent lasts at least 2 months, if not longer; and I do at least 2-3 large loads per day!

The bottle is quite heavy and large, so it would be wise to transfer some into a small container.  Since this bulk amount of  detergent is hard to find other than Sam’s Club, the internet is the place to find it!

All in all, this detergent works very well for my family.  In my opinion, there is no comparison at the present time that beats the low price, safe ingredients, and effectiveness of Ecos Laundry Detergent.

    1. I just washed my van with Ecos laundry detergent so far does not appear to have left any film even on windows. I did not do the windshield just in case. I have just bought my second bottle and am satisfied with this for the most part non scented product. toby

    2. Toby, did you find an environmentally-healthy wax to use on the van?
