Lucky Duck Wine at Walmart
I like a good glass of wine about as much as I like dark chocolate, sushi and coffee. If you know me, you understand the brevity of that statement. I’m what you call a cheap wine connoisseur. Oh, don’t get me wrong, if I had to choose, I would marry up in the wine food chain. But seeing how things are, with most of my money going to diapers, wipes, expensive senior dog food, you name it –I’m sticking with Walmart wine. About a year ago, my husband and I decided for kicks, to try Oak Leaf Wine at Walmart. It was $2.97. We laughed, but figured that being out ~$3 was nothing to sweat over. To top off our wine shopping spree, our checkout experience deemed fateful. The darling cashier informed us that our cheap wine had actually won some awards. She went on explaining that in a blind taste test, most people preferred this wine over more expensive ones. We were happy with ourselves for our little find as we clutched our brown paper bag and headed home. “Wow, this is actually good!” exclaimed hubby. I agreed. We were on to something. We devoted ourselves to Oak Leaf – for better or for worse.
Flash forward a year.
I have a confession to make: We cheated on Oak Leaf. That’s right –we’ve found another. It lured us by it’s attractive label, and fancy appearance. It taunted us with the same low price of… (drum beat) $2.97! Don’t fault or judge us, we simply had to give in to the temptation. It sat right next to our precious Oak Leaf, as if to say “pick me, pick me, I’m prettier, I taste better! It was right. It’s name –Lucky Duck, from Southeastern Australia. We tried the Shiraz. The label boasts, ”Lucky You!” Not only did this wine look expensive, it was smooth going down. We look forward to more cheap wine excursions to Walmart soon to try the whole darn line as soon as we can –Lucky US for finding this new, affordable, great tasting wine.

I tried this wine the other day and have to say I was really impressed with the quality.
My wife brought home a bottle of the Luck Duck Shiraz today. We each had a glass with our lasagna dinner. Wow, this wine really impressed me given its price! Although I think it cost about $3.97 at our Wal-Mart. This is definitely on the list to buy again.
I tried the Lucky Duck Cabernet Sauvignon from walmart last night (one glass) and tonight had our daughter and son-inlaw over for dinner and cards. I had two more glasses of wine and my daughter pointed out something in my glass. Several long purple fragments(grape rines?)in my glass and when I looked at the almost emptly bottle I saw several more of the strings in the bottle. Has anybody else notieced this in their lucky duck wine?. If so do you know what it is?
I haven’t noticed anything floating in the wine, but I will pay closer attention from now on! Maybe you can find out how to contact the company and inquire about it…
It definitely doesn’t have a cheap wine aftertaste that most have. I love the Cabernet and the Merlot as well.
So far we have tried the Cabernet and the Malbec. Both were really good. Ours cost $3.97….just wish the local Wal-mart carried it instead of the nearby one. We will continue with our love of Oak Leaf until the local carries Lucky Duck. It will have to be a special occasion wine. lol
tried the malbec, initially thought it was great at such a low price, after a few days opened it was not as good, that’s not altogether unexpected, it developed a sort of petroleum flavor. i still went out and got 3 more bottles and i usually drink norton malbec, which is good. the shiraz you can skip, yellow tail/penquin/alice are a little better… the cab is O.K. but lacks structure and complexity but does not taste like koolaid and is drinkable at this price of 3.97.
Ani mur,
I noticed the same strange taste with the malbec after a few days, but not with the merlot or cab. Not sure what that’s about. I’ve never been a big fan of yellow tail. I really love the brand “Black Swan.” Their line of blended reds are great.
I love the Malbec Lucky Duck. You have to try it! For 3.97 it’s the bomb. It would be good at 9.97 also.
Tammy,
I love the malbec also. I compared the chardonney with Oak Leaf’s, and prefer Oak Leaf. Have you tried any others? I noticed the quick price jump to $3.97 from the original $2.97 I found it for the first time. I suppose they wanted to take some Oak Leaf followers!
This wine is definitly tastey to the last drop!
I tried the wine and although it sucked.. Tried the Malbec and Shiraz. I have to say it was better than the Oak.. man that had a bite to it. The Oak Reds vary too much from bottle to bottle.
I have tried all 5 Lucky Duck varietals and I have to say I believe this is the best wine for the money. Can’t believe I can buy a Argentina Malbec for under 4 bucks. Great wine that I will continue to buy.
We are big drinkers and cheerleaders of this great line of inexpensive wines from Walmart. Especially tasty are the reds, i.e. Melbec, Sarah, and Merlot. Where else can you find so much delight in a bottle of grape? These wines married with cheese, snacks or a delicious meal are just a special occasion for living. We have a rack of wines to draw upon, but we turn to Lucky Duck when we want to sip or share pure pleasure.
I have always loved Malbec wine and have never had a bottle that I did not like. (Typical prices for malbec are 10-25) I saw this at walmart for 4 bucks a bottle and decided to give it a try tonight very smooth and just as good as the others. YUM … I love this Malbec wine too!
I think I will make an appointment to stock up for our next big office dinner.
I am by no means a wine snob, but only thing lucky about lucky duck, we were lucky to have not paid much for it.
I couldn’t recommend a wine, but I can recommend not buying the chiraz.
Perhaps I’m skewed, we did just get back from Italy, where 5$ gets you a great house wine. again I don’t drink wine, just ask my wife.. but there is a sharp difference in what we get here in the US vs ITALY
I tried the cab from lucky duck, only because it was 4 bucks…it was the most heartless, thin cab I’ve ever had. I couldn’t drink a full glass. I opened the bottle only 5 days later and it smelled like amonia.
I was really impressed with this wine! I bought the sauv. blanc, and didn’t even really want to try it, but have loved the taste! Will definitely buy again!
I’ve now had the Shiraz and the Cabernet Sauvignon. I have to say that I’m really satisfied with this wine at the cost. You really can’t find a better deal than this with such a nice taste on the tongue!
