Parent’s Choice Organic Infant Formula

I am fortunate in that I was able to successfully breastfeed both of my baby boys; 6 months for one, 7 1/2 for the other.  As I made the transition to infant formula, the question that weighed heavily on my mind was, organic or not? I myself drink organic milk, so I decided to research some organic formulas.   I am not hard core on this subject, and have used regular formula when my brand of organic formula was out at the grocery store.

Review of Ecos Liquid Laundry Detergent

Laundry is a neverending, daunting task that has literally taken over my very existence ever since my precious, yet messy boys have entered my life.  My laundry room is a war zone with ketchup stained t-shirts, poop filled onsies, and of course it wouldn’t be complete without mine and my husband’s clothes honoring the days events with remnants of spit up here, yogurt hand prints there.   Not a day goes by that the laundry monster doesn’t savagely wreak havoc in my house.

How to make your own non-toxic cleaning products

Just up until a few years ago, I scoured my house with products containing bleach and many unpronounceable ingredients, because I thought I was supposed to.  If the bottle said “kills 99% of household germs,” I was all over it.  I always opened windows for ventilation, but still got a headache anyway.  I even mopped my tile kitchen floors with a bleach cleaner.  Boy, how things have changed!  As I started to read more and more about the many alternatives to common household cleaners, I finished using up my products (see why you shouldn’t flush them) and made the switch.  Also, after digging a little deeper, I found inexpensive ways to clean and disinfect with products I already had in my pantry!  There is some misunderstanding these days about killing germs. Germs are everywhere, and killing them all is not only impossible, but not beneficial to our health. For example, hand washing became the big deal this year with the Swine Flu epidemic wreaking havoc everywhere (especially in my hometown, where some of the first case were reported).  Everyone reached for their antibacterial soap. The truth is, just using hot water and regular ol’ soap kills 92% of germs (how do I know this?). What about the other 8%?  Leave them be.

Is Oxybenzone in your Sunscreen?

Hot weather is just around the corner. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for sun and fun!  However, I am alarmed at discovering that most sunscreens on the market don’t have appropriate UV protection and contain harmful chemicals. Even the ones that say “broad spectrum” are lacking in keeping harmful UVA rays from penetrating our skin.  Some good news: I just read  that new preparations such as micronized titanium dioxide are less conspicuous on the skin and offer substantial protection against both UVA and UVB.  There is some controversy surrounding titanium dioxide –  Click here to read a short summary.

What are Parabens and Phthalates?

It seems like lately that society is being bombarded with chemical scares.  First, the lead paint issue, then BPA, now Parabens and Phthalates. I for one, am taking notes on all of this because when it comes right down to it; I’m not taking any chances for my childrens’ sake.  I started researching this topic about two years ago when I first became pregnant with my first son. In addition to replacing my health and beauty products for myself, I also made sure that once my son was born, I would use only organic, chemical free products on him.

In lay terms, Parabens act as a preservative in cosmetics, lotions, shampoos, and many other products to reduce the chance of contamination of bacteria, mold, and fungi.  Sounds simple enough, right? Where the issue is being raised is concerning Parabens acting as estrogenic compounds. Basically, the body treats Parabens as hormones, thus disrupting the endocrine system, increasing cancer risks.  Parabens have been in our products for years, but it’s use is coming to the forefront because now Scientists are wondering if the accumulation of these estrogenic compounds in our system really is a bigger threat than once believed.
