How to banish belly fat!
Oh, the battle of the bulge. When one thinks of that term, it’s not bulging calves that come to mind. Belly fat is, and always will be the main concern for people who need or want to lose weight. Why does the body store fat so readily in that area? My last post gave the reasons. Now what? Let’s examine the possibilities in achieving not only a smaller waistline, but an overall reduction in body fat.

As a strength and conditioning specialist, I hear this question over and over again, which is first preceded by the telling of how the person can’t understand why their belly is bulging….even after a low fat diet. I am compelled to list the top five reasons for belly fat because there are so many books, diets, and just plain false information out there. I want to emphasize the basics. Without further ado, and in no particular order:

Time and time again, people “go on” diets; and that’s where they go wrong. “Going” on a diet automatically sets a person up for failure because what they are essentially doing is temporarily changing their eating and activity habits to produce the desired effect of weight loss. In my career as a government and corporate wellness manager, there was hardly a day that went by that I wasn’t asked about how to quickly lose weight. Most of these folks were on the verge of their annual summer vacation, or planning to go to a wedding or reunion of some sort. That told me many things about their seriousness; one in particular being that they weren’t in it for the long haul. Weight loss isn’t quick. It took years to pack on the pounds; so taking it off is going to take some time, ” my friends.” – thank you John McCain for that little slang term.

Dr. Oz made a statement during an interview I was watching that pleased me so much, I decided to expound on the subject with this post. I can’t remember the exact question and answer, but it went something like this: They asked what people should focus on the most when it comes to an anti-aging regimen. He stated that failing to maintain and increase lean muscle was the number one mistake people make. I almost leapt from my seat! I’ve been screaming that for years! I see so many people who do cardio, and more cardio; yet they never seem to look any differently. While trying to lose weight and change the shape of your body —strength training is a must!
